A TD has described as completely unacceptable the turning away of a teenage boy, who had severed part of his finger in an accident, from Galway University Hospital (GUH) because overnight emergency surgery was not available and, crucially, because there were no trolleys available.

Outlining the case in the Dail this week Ms Harkin explained how, after the accident, the young person was brought to NOWDOC in Carrick-on-Shannon, which was closed. “A sibling drove him to Sligo University Hospital where the hand was bandaged, the severed piece of the finger was put into ice, and they were told to go to Galway University Hospital for treatment. So, they arrived at GUH at about 9:00 o'clock that night having already driven 145km.

Cairde Ghaillimh le Gaeilge enjoy Fulacht Fia in heart of the Gaeltacht

The Fulacht Fia Chairde Ghaillimh le Gaeilge took place in Builín Blasta in Ceardlann an Spidéil last week. It was the Fulacht Fia’s first time to move outside of Galway city and it was a great success. During the event, Cairde Gaillimh le Gaeilge enjoyed strolling among the beautiful craft shops in the Ceardlann. The wonderful Emer Killian and her fantastic team served delicious food, (all as Gaeilge) the guests were entertained with excellent music by Mike Stewart and Maria Fahy.

Bernadette Mullarkey, Cathaoirleach Ghaillimh le Gaeilge welcomed the new Mayor of Galway City, Cllr Eddie Hoare to the Cairde Fulacht Fia. The Deputy Mayor of Galway City, Cllr Dónal Lyons was also in attendance as well as Cllr Terry O’Flaherty, Cllr Frank Fahy and Cllr Alan Cheevers. She also thanked all of the funding organisations who have supported Gaillimh le Gaeilge.
