Galway Bay golf course set to reopen after redesign

One of Galway’s top 18-hole PGA Championship golf courses – with a state-of-the-art golf academy - is soon to re-open to the public after an expert redesign by legendary World Cup and Ryder Cup golfer Christy O’Connor Jnr.

The Galway Bay Golf Resort, in Renville, Oranmore, is currently taking a limited number of annual memberships for 2010 along with golf and society bookings. A unique festival of golf is also planned to coincide with the full reopening of the course next spring.

Who wants to be a thousandaire?

On Thursday November 19, Gaelscoil Riada brings the hugely popular Who wants to be a Thousandaire to The Raheen Woods Hotel, Athenry. The show has attracted large audiences over the past seven years, and is fast becoming the most popular source of fund-raising for schools and clubs. Contestants are drawn from ticket sales with each contestant playing for €1,000. The show is fully computerised with 50/50, ask the audience, and a video linked phone a friend. The questions and four possible answers are displayed on two 8ft x 6ft screens, one at each side of the stage.

Founded in 1986 by a group of 16 taxi drivers to provide the people of Galway and visitors to the city with a reliable, fast, and efficient taxi service, Galway Taxis has evolved into Galway's premier taxi company.

Changing with the trends and needs of customers the company is now the only transport company in the city that sanitises vehicles, to prevent the spread of swine flu. After each customer leaves a taxi, the driver sprays the car with a sanitising spray that is also used in hospitals. The spray kills all known germs, and protects customers from swine flu. Drivers are also utilising a special hand cream, which sanitises hands from the spread of swine flu.

Family fun day at Coole

On Thursday November 5 the Arts Series continues at Coole with renowned musician and singer/song writer John Faulkner. Faulkner who is currently musician in residence with Galway County and Galway City councils presents Farewell to Eirinn, a varied selection of songs that refer to emigration. On Sunday November 8 from 2pm to 4pm Coole Park will host Coole Trees in Winter, a family fun day event. Visitors will explore Coole in early winter with staff, learn about native and non-native trees and how to identify them, even when the leaves are gone. Activities for families include outdoor walks, scavenger hunts, indoor fun, and art and craft work. On Monday November 9 from 8pm to 9pm the second of the heritage lectures entitled Being Environmentally Friendly takes place.

MovieExtras.ie has announced details of its open day in Galway on Saturday November 7 to recruit extras for film, TV, and commercial productions. The recruitment drive is on the back of involvement with Jack Taylor and another major production which will be shooting soon. MovieExtras.ie is on the look-out for people of all different backgrounds, ages and looks. A bit of Gaelige may also help for future Irish language productions (but is not a requirement). And of course no experience is required.
