High noon as HSE West prepares to wield axe on local services

A leading local trade union official says he is hopeful that the powerful campaign mounted by the public against the proposed health cuts may influence the HSE West when it wields its axe today (Thursday).
Commenting in advance of a noon meeting - in which HSE management will meet its regional health forum members as well as Oireachtas politicians to reveal its proposals to cut spending by €65m this year - Paul Hardy, SIPTU health services organiser locally, says he believed the health authority would have been “surprised” by the pressure brought to bear by the health care unions and the public.

A blimp bearing advertising for a Tuam based company broke free from where it was tethered at the National Ploughing Championships to roam the air prompting the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) to put out an official air-safety alert.
The blimp owned by JFC Manufacturing Co Ltd, a well-known farm plastics company based in Tuam, broke free at the event in Athy, Co Kildare, on Tuesday morning and took off into the air. According to JFC managing director John Concannon the IAA had to be notified as a precaution as the unusual flying object was flying in the direction of Baldonnell airport.
