Fianna Fail councillor Michael Crowe is opposed to Sen David Norris addressing the Galway City Council meeting in order to secure its backing for the presidency. He made this clear on Monday It is not the first time that Cllr Crowe has had allegations made against him — during his mayorship over the past twelve months, he was accused of snubbing the Bród gay and lesbian parade in the city, and it was alleged this week that he did not reply to a letter from David Norris to address the city council. However, he insists that he does not have any problem with Senator Norris’s sexuality, just his opinions. Here he outlines his reasons:

The introduction of cystic fibrosis screening for newborn babies will result in earlier intervention and treatment and a much better prognosis long term for children with the condition, according to the chairperson of the Galway branch of the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland.
Mary Lane Heneghan says nationwide screening - for this genetic disorder of the lungs and digestive system - which commenced at the beginning of the month, is a “most welcome” development and something which the national CF association has been campaigning for for years.

The case of an Oranmore man accused of illegally cultivating more than €2,000 worth of cannabis plants in a shed has been adjourned.
Jason Donnellan (23) with an address at 3 Castle Court, Oranmore, was summoned to appear at Galway District Court recently for drug related offences which include being in possession of cannabis as well as cultivating, without a licence, plants of the genus cannabis - contrary to Section 17 and Section 27 (as amended by Section 7 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1984) of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 - at a former residence in the Cloonarkin Drive area of Oranmore on July 2 2010.
