Lucy Murray, a fifth year student in Dominican College, Taylor’s Hill recently attended a workshop in Trinity College where the aim was the creation of a Charter for 21st Century Learning. The emphasis was that the education system needed to change to fit the needs of our society but change will not happen if there is no evidence that it is wanted. Lucy has penned this article containing the viewpoint of a student in the educational debate and stressing the need for change.

Astronomy club to hold ‘Dynamic Sun’ talk

The Icelandic volcano which has caused massive disruption to airflights and left passengers stranded has also left Galway city bereft of its civic an political leaders who are stuck in China.

The Mayor of Galway, councillor Declan McDonnell, his wife Mary; the Galway City Council’s director of services Tom Connell; NUI, Galway vice president Jim Ward; the Chamber of Commerce president Paul Shelley, the Registrar of the GMIT Bernard O’Hara; and the Marine Institute’s Dr Michael O’Toole are currently in Beijing, capital of the People’s Republic of China, and will not be able to get flights out the country until Friday.

Gorse fires across Connemara

Fire crews from Galway and Clifden were battling gorse fires across Connemara this week, with fires breaking out yesterday in Derryinver, Moyard, and Roundstone/Ballyconneely.

Fire services have spent much of this week working to quench fires which have wreaked havoc across the region, with fires also reported in Oughterard earlier in the week.

Arrabawn to buy Dawn milk

Dawn Dairies milk business in Co Galway, owned by the Kerry Group, is set to be taken over by Arrabawn Co-op in a deal which is understood to be worth nearly €6 million.

Arrabawn Co-op entered into a 30-day consultation process with Dawn Dairies employees on Tuesday to discuss the transfer of the business. Arrabawn has now agreed in principal to go through with the purchase.
