Walsh condemns strike which let prisoner escape hospital

Fine Gael councillor Brian Walsh has condemned as “outrageous” an incident which saw a prisoner abscond from University Hospital Galway after prison warders, who refused to work overtime, sought a temporary release for him.

Last Wednesday an inmate of Castlerea Prison was brought to the UHG in order to undergo a medical procedure to remove razor blades and batteries which he had swallowed.

In a statement yesterday, the HSE confirmed that the hospital’s management team had no alternative but to close St Michael’s ward due to “cost containment and the non-replacement of staff”.

Fine for city man who refused to give name after high speed chase in Mayo

A Galwayman who was a passenger in a car which was involved in a high speed chase by Gardai in which a number of suspicious items was found, along with a bag containing cutting equipment, was fined €250 in Ballyhaunis District Court this week after pleading guilty to not giving gardai his name.

Kenneth Bohan , 5 St Judes Apartments, Ballybrit, Galway was a passenger in a car which was passed by Garda David Donnelly who was on patrol with a colleague in a squad car on December 19 2008 on Knock Road, Ballyhaunis at 12.45am.
