“I used to run shows and gigs in the university, UCG as it was, and I remember Mike from that time as he was big man, but I first met him properly in the 1980s, when the Galway Arts Festival was starting to get a bit of recognition. Back then I had a secretary and I was running around on a bike. Then we applied to the Arts Council to give us a grant so that we could appoint an administrator.

Salthill Park looks set to host an open air music concert for the fist time in more than 25 years and English folk-pop band Mumford & Sons look set to be the headline act.

Plans are under way to try and bring Mumford & Sons, who are best known for the single ‘Little Lion Man’ and their hugely successful debut album Sigh No More, to play in a concert in Salthill Park with the date being considered of Saturday June 9.

NUI Galway is to link up with two leading Chinese universities to further research and facilitate student and researcher exchanges between Galway and China.

The Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) based at the local university has signed collaborative agreements with both Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Fourth Medical Military University Hospital in Xi’an as part of the recent Trade and Investment Mission to Shanghai and Beijing by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister Richard Bruton TD. Funded by Science Foundation Ireland, REMEDI is Ireland’s leading research institute in the area of regenerative medicine and stem cell research.

A 26-year-old man caught with cannabis herb, and amphetamines shoved in a freezer, during a search by gardai at his place of residence has been fined €100 and ordered to carry out community service, while his flatmate was fined for possession of “self-medicating” tablets.

Ciaran O’Donovan with an address at 91 Wellpark Grove, Wellpark, Galway, appeared at Galway District Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of drugs at the home address on June 8, 2011. His flatmate, Patrick Roddy (29) pleaded guilty to one count of possession of drugs at the same location and on the same date.
