Galway woman avoids jail after man packed cannabis in her case

A woman described as “gullible, naïve and an easy target” has avoided a jail term after a man she had just gone on holiday with packed almost €60,000 of cannabis into her suitcase.

Paula Cunnea (48) who had been living in Cill Cais, Clybaun Road, Galway, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of cannabis, valued at €58,786, for sale or supply at Dublin Airport on March 5, 2011. She has since returned to live with her extended family in London.

Health Minister agrees to circumvent recruitment ban to avoid ‘looming crisis’ - Walsh

The Minister for Health has agreed to circumvent the moratorium on recruitment in order to avoid a looming crisis following a spate of retirements in the Orthopaedic Department at Merlin Park Hospital, that is according to Fine Gael TD Brian Walsh.

Deputy Walsh confirmed that the decision follows a meeting between Minister James Reilly and a number of orthopaedic consultants from the hospital last January, at which he was told that almost one third of the nursing staff from the department were set to retire in February. Deputy Walsh, who arranged the meeting, warned the minister that the exodus of nurses threatened to cripple the provision of orthopaedic services in the region unless retiring staff were replaced.

“I used to run shows and gigs in the university, UCG as it was, and I remember Mike from that time as he was big man, but I first met him properly in the 1980s, when the Galway Arts Festival was starting to get a bit of recognition. Back then I had a secretary and I was running around on a bike. Then we applied to the Arts Council to give us a grant so that we could appoint an administrator.
