Fianna Fáil TD for Galway East Colm Keaveney has accused the Government and the HSE of breaching the confidentiality of hundreds of women who have received medical cards as part of a redress scheme for women who were resident in certain institutions and homes.

A charity table quiz, to raise funds for ISPCC, the Special Olympics Ireland, and the National Youth Foundation takes place on Tuesday July 21 at 8pm at the Loft at Seven, Bridge Street.

Galway women Katie O’Neill and Aoife O’Flynn are taking part in the 15km Tour de Picnic run in September to raise money for the charities. “These charities have seen recent cuts in government funding and have become hugely reliant on donations,” said O’Neill. “It is important to support them so they can continue their great work.”

This is the view of Labour Galway senator Lorraine Higgins who, this week in Seanád Éireann, raised concerns about the way in which some businesses use objections in the planning process. She told fellow senators that the majority of objections are made by individuals and community groups "with real concerns", and that her focus was on "a number of body corporates in particular that use the process as a strategic tool so as to clamp down on competition in their chosen field".
