Galway exceeds its recycling target, reveals WEEE Ireland ahead of weekend collections

WEEE Ireland, the Irish compliance scheme for electrical and battery recycling, is holding two free recycling events in Galway, on Saturday November 7.  The collection events, in association with Galway City Council, will take place from 10am – 4pm at Galway Greyhound Track Car Park, College Road, Galway City and Toft Park Car Park, Salthill, Galway City

WEEE Ireland’s Annual Environmental Report has revealed that WEEE Ireland collected almost 1,590 tonnes of electronic waste from Galway in 2014. This equates to almost 6.5kg per person in Galway, over the EU target of 4kg per head.

A fundraising Table Quiz will be held in An Pucan Bar on Thursday November 12 commencing at 7.30pm (tables of four for €40)  to raise funds for Pieta House.  All are welcome on the night but there are limited tables so please confirm your attendance – it will be a fun filled event with table prizes, raffle and finger food served.

The Table Quiz is on the run up to a 250Km charity run in aid of Pieta House being completed by the staff of Collins McNicholas on Friday November 27 at the Athlone Institute of Technology indoor athletics track when the staff of Collins McNicholas nationwide have pledged to walk and run the distance to raise vital funds for this worthy national charity.

NUI Galway’s Cell EXPLORERS science outreach programme has announced the launch of their new partnership with the University of Limerick (UL) and Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT). Funded by a two-year Science Foundation Ireland Discover Award, the partnership will see teams visit primary schools in their localities sharing the wonder of science, allowing children to act like real scientists in their own classrooms.

Progressive city like Galway shouldn’t be putting half its stray dogs to sleep, says MADRA as they await answers and commitment from City Council

Local dog rescue charity MADRA has issued a call to Galway City Council to provide them with the wherewithal to reduce Galway city’s unacceptably high dog euthanasia rate. 

A proposal to reduce the rate (second highest in the country) has been with the Council for almost six months now, but  has not yet been decided upon.  The matter was further confused earlier this month when the Council intimated at their October meeting that they were working with other charities such as Dogs Trust and GSPCA to solve the problem — but both charities have since stated in writing that they have not taken any dogs from the Council.
