It’s been three and a half years since I left Galway. The winding streets, the salty winds and icy rain that blew life and excitement into your lungs were beginning to wane for a whole generation. I had spent three years at NUIG flitting between Drama Soc and Flirt FM radio, and in between squeezing out a bachelor’s degree in English and Classics together with a diploma in Irish. We came in as “freshers” just when the Celtic Tiger was unleashing its final booming roar, Rag Week and campus life were electric and Galway was alive.

A number of city councillors have voiced their frustration about the lack of a direct bus service linking Knocknacarra and Westside with the industrial estates on the eastern side of the city such as Parkmore, Liosbaun, and Ballybane.
Bus Eireann representatives Gerry Cannon and Brian Connolly gave a comprehensive presentation to councillors about the city’s public transport system at this week’s local authority meeting.

BBC Science programme presenter, Professor Iain Stewart will deliver a geology public lecture at NUI Galway on Monday next, November 9. The lecture, ‘Between a Rock and a Hard Place: communicating geology to society’, is a collaboration between Galway Earth and Ocean Sciences Student Society, Galway Geological Association and NUI Galway’s Earth and Ocean Sciences.
Professor Iain Stewart is Professor of Geoscience Communication with the University of Plymouth and has worked on several science programmes for the BBC, including the BAFTA nominated ‘Earth: The Power of the Planet’. His research interests are in the broad area of Earth hazards and natural disasters, particularly in terms of investigating past major earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions in the Mediterranean region.
