Fianna Fáil TD for Roscommon/Galway Deputy Eugene Murphy has called on the Minister for Justice to give a Ballinasloe woman back her husband after the Brazilian native was deported despite the fact that their marriage was recognised by the HSE as genuine. Deputy Murphy raised the case of Kleber Silva Medeiros and Ballinasloe woman Harriett Bruce under the Topical Issues section of Dáil business last week.

What have Paddy Cullivan (of Callans Kicks), Professor Roy Foster and Hector O hEochagáin in common? Not much you might say, but in fact all three will be taking part in The Centenary Conversations, Galway from Thursday to Saturday next week.

The fact that Paddy, Roy and Hector appear in the same programme listing tells us a lot not just about the events in Galway but also about the entire centenary year. A year that we thought would be all about our past turned out to be as much about our future. A year marked down for historical analysis became, as well, a year of huge cultural engagement. A year that many feared would be contentious became a year in which we came together and rediscovered our citizenship.

Charity concert at Ardrahan Church next week

The death has taken place of Mr James Lydon, popularly known as Jimmy, who in his day was director/owner of LydonHouse, and owner of numerous pubs and restaurants locally, including Tea Time Express, Dublin. He employed more than 360 people. He was a passionate promoter of Galway, and a charming, erudite, man who was always willing to offer practical advice to people starting in business. President Michael D Higgins was in attendance at his funeral on Saturday.

Funding announced for Galway rural recreation projects

Rural recreation projects and facilities throughout County Galway are to benefit from grants, announced this week, as part of Rural Development Fund.

The funding will allow the development of new recreational facilities and the promotion of existing facilities. A total of €60,000 has been allocated for capital investment in the Hymany Way in the Clonbrock and Ahascragh areas and €46,286 in funding for Coillte-controlled trails. Some €1.3 million is being allocated to Coillte for maintenance of current trails across the country.

Island Ferries Teo announced that it will cease the operation of the winter ferry service to Inis Mór, citing lack of profitability of the service and calling for changes to landing charges imposed by Galway County Council. This is the second year in a row that the beleaguered island has faced the threat of the loss of their ferry service and also follows threats to the regular air service.
