GMIT to host public lecture on Ireland’s financial crisis

The GMIT School of Business will host a public lecture by Ireland’s representative on the European Court of Auditors, Kevin Cardiff, in the Galway campus on Monday next, November 13, 11am to 12 noon.

Mr Cardiff was secretary general of the Department of Finance from 2010 to 2012, overseeing the EU-IMF bank bailout programme. From that experience, he published the book Recap: Inside Ireland’s Financial Crisis. He joined the European Court of Auditors in March 2012 and is Ireland’s sole representative on that body.

This was the thirtieth time that an accident has happened here in the past few years, but the more remarkable fact is that nobody has yet been killed, given its proximity to a local national school. AIB Galway hosted a community event for COPE Galway and Galway Hospice last week in the Clayton Hotel in Ballybrit. In attendance was GAA Hurler of the Year Joe Canning and his fellow All-star teammate Gearoid Mc Inerney. More than 300 people attended the event to help raise funds for the two charities. Over €1,500 was raised which will be split evenly amongst the two charities.

Portumna public water supply removed from Remedial Action List following Irish Water works

The Portumna water supply has been removed from the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Remedial Action List (RAL) following a programme of upgrade works to the treatment plant by Irish Water.

Last May, the Portumna water supply was deemed to be THM-compliant by the EPA who then changed the scheme’s categorisation on the RAL to ‘treatment and management issues’. Upon completion of a year-long programme of works to enhance process optimisation procedures at the plant, along with upgrade works, the scheme has been removed from the list.
