NUI Galway develops novel devices to support people with Parkinson’s

NUI Galway is developing a suite of unobtrusive, wearable electronic devices to help manage the debilitating motor symptom of Parkinson’s disease, referred to as Freezing of Gait.

As part of this project the university has developed a novel wearable electronic device, called cueStim, designed to prevent or relieve freezing of gait, which is commonly described by people with Parkinson’s as feeling as if their feet are stuck or glued to the floor preventing them from moving forward.

Huge crowds turned out for this year’s Christmas Day Swim at Blackrock, Salthill, in aid of COPEGalway’s Services for people experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, and recipients of services for older people in Galway. An estimated 8-10,000 people thronged the steps of Blackrock in what has become an annual family tradition for those living in and returning to Galway for Christmas.

I was on a whirlwind tour of various places in the west of Ireland recently, attending Gorta Self Help Africa events, especially the Gorta Self Help Africa Ball where close on €30,000 was raised for the charity’s work in 10 countries in Africa. We are so thankful for this support, and indeed from all the parishes in Galway and the west of Ireland that have organised fundraising events during the year.

The Minister for Community Development, Natural Resources, and Digital Development, Seán Kyne, has said that the GP visit cards and extra funding for respite care will help carers and people with disabilities in Galway.

The new measures will see all carers in receipt of carer’s allowance qualify for a GP visit card while an extra €10 million in funding will provide more respite care for people with disabilities.

Not fit to adjudicate on a key strategic investment project of the scale of an €850m, Tier 1, data centre. There are lessons to be learned here at the highest levels, but who is listening?
