Collingwood Football Club, the most popular professional sports team in Australia, has come to the aid of Galway’s fledgling Aussie Rules Team, the Midwest Magpies.
The Magpies have only been in existence a short while and had not as yet been able to secure a playing kit for their inaugural season in the Australian Rules Football League of Ireland, but the famous Melbourne club has stepped in and is providing a set of jerseys used by its first team last year. The club is also sending some footballs to help get the game off the ground in Galway.

At the Irish National Photographic Awards held recently by the Irish Professional Photographers Association, former Galway Advertiser photographer, Neil Warner won nine Gold Awards. In addition to this he received the supreme award Irish Pictorial and Travel Best Image Award 2010.

A Salthill man who died suddenly in the United States was remembered this week with fondness as the “life and soul” of the bar in which he worked in Boston.
Kevin Armitage of Dr Mannix Road emigrated to the United States when he was 19 and worked in numerous pubs over the years. He was found dead at his home at the weekend. His ashes will be spread at Black Rock, Salthill at 3.30 this Saturday.

Little did he know exactly what he just started, because start something he did. All contemporary economic and social wisdom indicates that the rot that exists in our socio economic and political system began to manifest itself during the middle of 2002 or thereabouts. Given that those tasked with managing the economy at the time deny any responsibility, then obviously someone else must be responsible for our economic distress. My money is on Roy Keane.
