The Supreme Court has set aside an arbitrator's award made in favour of a construction company in a dispute with Galway City Council over withdrawing funds relating to a €6.3 million contract for the redevelopment of Eyre Square.
Mr Justice Donal O'Donnell found arbitrator Geoffrey F. Hawker had "misconducted" the arbitration in the technical sense and this required ed the setting aside of his October 2007 award on the dispute between the Council and Samuel Kingston Construction Company (SKC) arising from a contract of April 5 2004 for the redevelopment of Eyre Square.

Delegates at the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors Annual Conference in Galway have passed a motion calling for the full time arming of Regional Support Units (RSUs).
The motion which was brought by the Galway Branch of the AGSI and backed by Cork City, Cork West, Westmeath, Meath, and Kildare branches, is in response to concerns over rising crime rates and the need for the RSU across the country to be able to respond more rapidly to incidents involving firearms.
