Galway schools continue to suffer from education cuts

There is growing concern for the future education of primary school children in Galway caused by pressures placed on already dwindling resources due to cuts, teacher employment restrictions, and increases in class sizes.

Figures from the Department of Education released this week showed that nationally more than 86 per cent of primary pupils are in class sizes of 20 or more, with one in five in classes of more than 30. The 2010 to 2011 school year figures for Galway show that 16.5 per cent of children were in class sizes of more than 30, while 62 per cent were in class sizes of between 20 and 29.

While the student body only returned to the area in the last two weeks, already the disruption, anti-social behaviour, and late night partying has reached levels where residents are demanding meetings with the college authorities. Elderly residents have also threatened to organise a picket on both the Student Union and President’s office in NUI, Galway.

A pharmacist from Galway has gone on trial this week accused of the murder of her elderly neighbour, who was found dead in the bedroom of her home in Newry, Co Down on Christmas Day three years ago.

The trial, which began at Belfast Crown Court on Monday, heard how 81-year-old Maire Rankin was allegedly murdered by her next door neighbour and that a cruxifix which hung over Ms Rankin’s bed had been used to beat her around the face. The trial also heard that Ms Rankin had been sexually assaulted after her death.
