Three Galway schools to benefit from European Investment Bank funding

Three Galway schools are to benefit from major improvement works after it was announced that the European Investment Bank has formally agreed to provide €100 million to the Irish Government for capital investment in schools across the country over the next two years.

The initiative, which was launched in Dublin by Ruairí Quinn, Minister for Education and Skills, and European Investment Bank president, Werner Hoyer, will involve the building of more than 550 new classrooms, as well as modernisation and construction works in 35 primary and 12 secondary schools. The funding will form part of the Government’s €219 million school expansion programme to be managed by the Department of Education and Skills.

People can learn about the facts and myths surrounding mental health at a special tent available during the Volco Ocean Race.

The initiative, the brainchild of the HSE’s mental health service in Galway in conjunction with See Change [an alliance of organisations working together to bring about positive change in public attitudes and behaviour towards people with mental health problems], is promoting positive mental health and working to reduce stigma. It will be showcased during the race, which runs until Sunday.

The Volvo Ocean Race is the perfect opportunity to exhibit the best of Irish culture to the world and Galway has a long and proud tradition in keeping the Irish language alive. With this in mind, Údarás na Gaeltachta, along with Gaillimh le Gaeilge, Conradh na Gaeilge, Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe, and Ealaín na Gaeltachta, have organised a Lá Gaelach (Day of Irish) which will take place on Thursday July 5.

The event was announced at the recent Cairde Ghaillimh le Gaeilge beárbaiciú (barbecue) by the chairman of Gaillimh le Gaeilge, Iggy O’Muircheartaigh. A host of Irish language events will take place on Lá Gaelach, giving locals and visitors a taste of our native language and culture. Events include exhibitions, music workshops, sean-nós singing, dance, and storytelling for young and old. For the musical, there will be lilting and percussion at beginner and intermediate level, in association with Traidphinic and Áras na nGael.
