Canney welcomes support for flood victims

Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney has welcomed the announcement of two Government schemes to support people and businesses affected by flooding.
The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection has activated the humanitarian assistance scheme for householders, while the Minister for Business, Enterprise, and Innovation, Heather Humphreys, has announced the opening of a scheme to provide assistance for small businesses, sports clubs, community, and voluntary organisations unable to secure flooding insurance.

"These years should be my golden years. Instead I am living in Dante's Circle of Hell," a Ballindooley woman whose house is set to be demolished as part of the plans to construct the Galway City Ring Road, told an oral hearing into the project this week.
Ballindooley resident Dee Goggins told the hearing that she believes this road project is part of a chicken and egg policy, saying that the pedestrian, cycling and public transport aspects cannot be built until the road is built.

The owners of the Corrib Great Southern site are currently waiting on the finalisation of development plans ahead of its planning permission submission to Galway City Council. In a statement to the Galway Advertiser issued at dawn today, they said that they hope to develop residential units and some retail units, but that this will require a Material Contravention that will have to be passed by councillors.
