Oh what a knight — Claregalway Castle set for marvellous weekend of medieval combat

The first, full-contact, medieval tournament in Ireland for over 400 years happened at Claregalway Castle in 2015 and returns this weekend Sept 30 to Oct 1 from 12pm-6pm.

Armoured knights from across the globe will descend on the fantastically restored 15th century Towerhouse Castle for this very unusual, but very real, martial arts tournament.

World record set in Galway ahead of Atlantic solo row

A group in Galway has set a new world record for the longest distance rowed in 24 hours by a mixed team aged between 30-39 years. The world record attempt was organised by Damian Browne, former Connacht & Leinster Rugby Star, who will set off on his own Solo Atlantic Rowing Challenge in December. The team of 35 people rowed 378,473 metres non-stop over the 24-hour period in the Warehouse Gym.

County council rejects feasibility study for greenway on western rail corridor

The Galway County Council rejected calls for a feasibility study to be carried out on the establishment of a greenway on the western rail corridor.

The motion which was brought forward by Tuam councillor Shaun Cunniffe and was signed by another five of his council colleagues, called on the local authority to seek funding from the Department of Transport, for a feasibility study with a view to possibly using the disused railway alignment along Athenry, Ballyglunin, Tuam, Kilconly, and Milltown as a greenway.

Man arrested in Ballinasloe following Roscommon assault

Gardaí investigating a serious assault which occurred in Roscommon a month ago arrested a man in Ballinasloe on Tuesday.

The man, believed to be in his forties, was one of two men arrested this week as part of the investigation into the incident. A second man, also in his forties, was arrested in Athlone yesterday morning.

The 21st birthday of the BAFFLE Poets Festival will be held on the October Bank Holiday weekend in O’Dea’s Hotel, Loughrea.

The heats will be held in The Arch Bar and Harney’s, both in Barracks Street, and this year’s theme is ‘The Long Point’, which is a popular water park in Loughrea, with People’s Choice selecting the finalists.
