Kinvara area visual arts will present a screening of the documentary Sean Scully Why This Not That? (53 mins) on the evening of Friday August 25 at 8pm with doors opening at 7.30pm.

The film takes an intimate look at the artist Sean Scully. Shot in an observational style, the main narrative thread begins with a blank canvas and ends with a completed painting. The film explores the meaning of his life, work, art, and creativity through his encounters with his students, at his exhibitions, with his sculpture in the south of France and at the canvas in his New York studio. The film is directed by Michael Doyle, produced by Patrick Timmons Ward, and financed by the Irish Film Board.

Fianna Fáil TD for Galway East Anne Rabbitte has called for a common sense approach to be adopted by the Department of Education and Bus Éireann when it comes to the School Transport Scheme. She was been reacting to a number of cases in her area where children are forced to travel long distances to pick-up points or walk down dangerous busy roads to get on the bus.

My first experience of Haiti was in 2009, when I travelled as part of a group of Irish volunteers with Haven, an Irish NGO working on the ground in Haiti. As part of the trip, we visited a town called Ouanaminthe in the north east of Haiti, where we spent a week working and upgrading buildings.

Four new directors appointed to 2020 board

Galway 2020 this week announced the appointment of four new directors to the board following a rigorous board selection process: Maire Geoghegan Quinn, Caroline Loughnane, Christopher Greene, and Enda Newton were selected on the basis of their respective skill sets in order to add value, and augment the existing Board to ensure the successful delivery of the European Capital of Culture for Galway in 2020.

This most recent round of appointments brings the number of Directors to 12, with the four new appointees joining Aideen McGinley (Chairperson), Cllr Pearce Flannery, Cllr Eileen Mannion, Declan McGonagle, Brendan McGrath, Kevin Kelly, Claire McColgan and Catherine Cullen. Welcoming the new appointments, Chairperson Aideen McGinley said “I’m delighted to welcome Máire, Caroline, Enda and Chris to the Board of Galway 2020. It is critical to the success of the project that we bring not just the right individual skill sets to the table, but more importantly the best overall mix of skills and individuals to complement each other, and our new Board members bring an impressive range of skills and experience that will be invaluable in building a cohesive and effective board.”

With the opening of a new community school in Clifden this year, the festival which takes place from September 13-24 2017, will be part of this new and exciting beginning for the town. The festival celebrates the arts for the children of Clifden Community School, Scoil Mhuire, Claddaghduff, Cleggan and Cashel and Ballyconnelly National school, helping to develop artistic and social skills, and provide an outlet for self-expression and development.

€500K Wild Atlantic Way advertising blitz to battle impact of Brexit

Earlier this week television and radio ads encouraging Irish people to get away from it all and explore Ireland’s west coast were broadcast across national channels such as RTE, TV3, Sky and Channel 4 as Fáilte Ireland’s latest home holiday campaign for the Wild Atlantic Way began in earnest. The €500k campaign focusses on bolstering Ireland’s off-season period and will run from the end of Augst through to mid-October reaching an estimated 3.3million Irish adults.

Building on the ‘Embrace the Wild Atlantic Way of Life’ campaign which was launched earlier this year, the campaign highlights a variety of experiences to be had along the coastal route which give visitors a chance to relax and reconnect with friends, family and loved ones.

GALWAY Hospice will hold its 12 th annual Galway Memorial Walk on Sunday, September 10. This year’s Memorial Walk will begin at 12 noon from Claddagh Hall to Blackrock and return - a total distance of 6.5km. The Memorial Walk is Galway Hospice’s biggest fundraising event of the year and since its inception in 2006, the event has raised over €1.7 million to help maintain essential hospice services.

As part of Heritage Week, the Terryland Forest Park Alliance is joining once again with the HSE and the Galway City Partnership in calling on the people of Galway city to take part in a ‘Reclaim the City’s Green Spaces’ walk to increase public awareness of the wonderful rich mix of natural landscapes and largely unknown rural lanes or boreens that exist so close to the city centre. The guided walk will begin at 9.30am on Sunday August 27 at ‘The Plots’ sports’ pitches on the Dyke Road.

There seems to be no downtime from tragedy and events now. As our news cycle goes to sleep on one side of the world, another erupts with a vengeance on the other side. Perhaps in years to come, the true impact of the events of the past two years on our mental health will come to be analysed and quantified.

Paris was shocking until Brussels was until Nice was until London was until Barcelona. And this coming after a year of coverage of the horrors in Syria and people drowning and dying on the shores of Europe. Because of this, it is easy to become weary of human suffering, to dismiss it because it has become so commonplace in our space. In the past, it was horrifyingly easy to dismiss suffering if it was on the African continent. As long as it stayed over there, and wasn’t over here, it was not easy for us to empathise fully with the life-altering awfulness of events in those regions.
