The party’s three councillors - Anna Marley, Mairéad Farrell, and Cathal Ó Conchúir - are refusing to wear the robes on the basis that they cost up to €800 to make for a new councillor, and that this expense is not justifiable in the current economic climate.

Galway will never have seen a city council like the one which gathers on Friday June 6 at 4pm in City Hall for its first meeting, and yet, from a certain point of view, it will be a council that is strangely familiar.
For all the drama, excitement, and cliff-hangers at last weekend’s count in the Westside Community Centre, Galway’s electorate returned four Fine Gael councillors, three Fianna Fáil, and three Independent former PDs. This is hardly the mark of a city embracing radicalism, especially when Fine Gael actually increased its representation - albeit by one councillor, Pearce Flannery, the only one of its four who was elected after exceeding the quota.
