Naughten demands town meeting to explore jobs strategy

Local TD Denis Naughten is calling on the Government to hold meeting of all agencies and local authorities in Galway and Roscommon to get jobs back in Ballinasloe.
The move comes in the wake of 115 job losses with the closure of US dispenser maker company Aptar, and Deputy Naughten says not enough is being done to find alternative employment in the town.

New figures revealing an almost five per cent rise in rents in Galway city in the last year calls into question how well the Government is enforcing rent pressure zones, according to assistant CEO of COPE Galway, Martin O'Connor.
Mr O'Connor's comments come after the latest report from property website Daft.ie which found that average rent in the city now stands at €1,363 per month.

Derelict lands at Caheroyan, Athenry will not be purchased by the Galway County Council it has been revealed.
The news comes after director of housing at the local authority, Michael Owens, responded to a motion submitted by Fianna Fáil councillor Shelly Herterich-Quinn at September's Athenry-Oranmore municipal district meeting who urged the council to purchase the lands for affordable housing under pillar three of the Rebuilding Ireland Plan as the site had secured planning permission in 2005 to build 27 houses.
