Small minority overrule Galway music tradition

Thu, Sep 19, 2019

Dear Editor,
It’s appalling to once again see a minority group overrule the majority. This time it’s a very small number of business people trying to overrule and destroy the great Galway tradition of busking and street entertainment. With the help of 12 councillors who obviously have little appreciation for this city’s world famous musical heritage and traditions, they will soon introduce a bye-law which in my and many others’ opinions, will destroy this city’s busking and street entertainment and ruin the ambiance of the city which has taken years to create.

Nominate a Galwegian for Volunteer of the Year awards

Thu, Sep 19, 2019

Galway Volunteer Centre is calling on the public to “help recognise kindness in our communities” by nominating a volunteer for the national Volunteer Ireland Awards.

Nominations are open until October 4. According to Galway Volunteer centre manager, Donncha Foley, “Volunteers are the lifeblood of Irish society and we are proud to have a strong culture of volunteering in Galway. Without them, many of the things we take for granted simply wouldn’t exist. It’s hard to think of an area that doesn’t benefit from volunteers - from healthcare to sport, supporting vulnerable people or protecting our environment, but they are unsung heroes, and with these awards we want to shine a light on the amazing people who give so much to Galway without any expectation of thanks or glory.”

Never before have we so needed the concept of meitheal

Thu, Sep 19, 2019

It has been a difficult week. A week in which tensions have been allowed to fester. Locally and globally, listening to the news has not been pleasant.

So it was timely that last evening’s programme launch of Galway 2020 has happened when it did. When we look at the importance we attribute to arts and to culture, there has always been a contrarian attitude that doubts the benefit it brings us individually, and as a community. There are questions asked if there is anything that can be taken from all that masquerades as culture. But if we have learned at all from the journey of the past few years, it is the defining of what is seen as culture. That we are a culture; that we are not just consumers of a culture, but creators of it, and curators of it.
