A Galway man facing firearms and explosives charges walked free from the Special Criminal Court yesterday after the prosecution was dropped.

Thomas Coffey (47), One Hundred Acres, Monivea, Athenry, was charged last year with the unlawful possession of an explosive substance – ammonium nitrate – at One Hundred Acres, Monivea, on January 26, 2011.

College survey finds one in five children going to school hungry

A new survey, carried out by the Health Promotion Research Centre at NUI Galway, has found that the number of children going to school or bed hungry has increased to 21 per cent of the more than 16,000 children surveyed, compared to 17 per cent in 2006.

The Health Behaviour in School-aged Children Survey 2010 which was launched this week by Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly, is a cross-sectional study conducted in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Office for Europe and is run every four years. The 2010 Irish HBSC survey was carried out by the Health Promotion Research Centre at NUI Galway and aims to increase our understanding of young people’s health and well-being, health behaviours, and their social context.

Bail granted for burglary accused

A 25-year-old man has been charged with a plethora of burglaries committed throughout Galway with two further charges brought against him for burglary attempts in Mayo.

The Galway District Court heard on Monday how Christopher Morrison with an address at 117 Sli Geal, Ballymoneen Road, had been charged with trespassing at a house at Carrowbrowne, Castlegar, and committing the theft of Wii console and games valued at €700, €130 cash, and a Hewlett Packard laptop valued at €500, on March 5, 2012, trespassing at a house at Monument Road, Menlo, and committing the theft of €350 cash on March 3, 2012, trespassing at a house at Tonabrocky, Rahoon, and committing the theft of two black Ipods valued at €400 and a passport, as well as trespassing at a second home in the same area and committing the theft of a Canon camera valued at €200, a green Ipod valued at €150, and €200 cash on February 27, 2012.

Five months suspended for assault of woman

A man who assaulted an elderly woman after failing to take medication for his psychological problems and consuming alcohol has been given a five month suspended sentence.

Peter Klap (46) with an address at 15 Gaelcarraig Park, Newcastle, pleaded guilty at Galway District Court on Monday to assaulting a woman and threatening and abusive behaviour at Cookes Corner, Newcastle Road.
