Families across the Galway region should reserve a few hours for the ‘Deireadh an Fomhair’ celebrations at Coole Park during the October Bank Holiday weekend. The line-up of events commences on Sunday October 28 with a multitude of activities to appeal to children collectively known as ‘Spooky Stuff For Kids’. Spooky Stuff For Kids consists of smelly spell cocktail and stick skeleton making, with an eerily themed scavenger hunt to finish the day. Children are invited to arrive bedecked in a Halloween costume but they do not have to dress up. The fun begins at 2.30pm and ends at 4pm.
The next portion of events takes place on Monday with a guided tree walk tour at 2.30pm. This is all inclusive day for the whole family and will be both an enjoyable family day out and an educating experience. Visitor staff will treat the walkers to a journey into the history of Coole by mirroring it through the various tree planting stages along the route. Participants can expect to spot native and non-native species throughout the walk and the day will be punctuated by an exploration into the remains of the Pinetum of exotic conifers that once belonged to Sir William Gregory.

A 23-year-old man, with 49 previous convictions, was given an 11 month suspended sentence at Galway District Court this week for the unauthorised taking of a vehicle.
Presiding District Court judge Mary Fahy stressed that it had not been her intention to show such leniency to a defendant who clearly had a history of offending but that the system in place prevented her from imposing a custodial sentence. Jamie Bailey of 1 Rossa Avenue, Mulgrave, Limerick, is currently serving 25 months in jail for a seperate offence, the maximum that can be imposed at district court level.
