Family Fun Day and Novelty Dog Show this weekend

Adults, children and much-loved dogs are invited to a Family Fun Day and Dog Show being held at St Finbars club at Southpark in the Claddagh this Sunday (May 26) from 1pm to 5pm. The fun-filled celebration will help raise money and awareness for the GRCC and local dog charity MADRA.

Dog owners are invited to bring along their cherished pooches and can put them through their paces with a novelty dog show, with many categories for children and their dogs too. There will also be plenty of entertainment for all the two-legged members of the family including a bouncy castle, animal activities, kiddies disco, face painting and traditional games like sac races, egg and spoon races, and a parent’s race.

Concern for future of council refuse service as 125 customers per month leave

The future of Galway City Council’s refuse collection service could be at risk - this was the concern expressed by many councillors who called for a public relations campaign to be launched after being informed that 125 customers per month, over the last four months, have been lost to competitors.

Director of services, Ciaran Hayes told councillors at a special meeting of Galway City Council that this year, up to the end of April, there has been a loss of 500 (4.5 per cent) customers who have chosen to leave the council’s service and go to other providers. He added that despite the council introducing a new pricing structure for 2013, whereby no household pays in excess of €229 for the standard three bin system, a competitor has introduced a lower rate.

Dangerous driving causing death accused remanded on bail

A 32-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving causing the death of a woman late last year.

The Galway District Court heard on Monday how Grzegorz Kolek with an address at 153 Rahylin Glebe, Ballybane, had been arrested on the morning of the court sitting. The Polish national was charged with driving in a manner, including speed, which having regard to all circumstances of the case (including the condition of the vehicle, the nature, condition, and use of the location, and the amount of traffic) was dangerous to the public, causing the death of Bridget Kelly at Headford Road on November 8, 2012.
