Galway families urged to go green in 2014

The Environmental Protection Agency is urging everyone in Galway to go ‘Green in 2014’. Over the festive season households will produce more than 65,000 tonnes of used packaging, that is the same weight as 65,000 small family cars! The EPA wants to remind Galway households to start the New Year afresh and ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ with a visit to your local recycling centre.

Jonathan Derham from the EPA says The New Year presents the perfect opportunity to re-think our attitude towards recycling.

NUI Galway academic first Irish researcher to receive European literature grant

Dr Marie-Louise Coolahan, Lecturer in English at NUI Galway, has been awarded the highly prestigious Consolidator Grant by the European Research Council. It is the first such award ever made to an Irish researcher in any field of literature, and the only award made in Ireland this year in the Social Sciences and Humanities.

Galway City Council adopts ‘pro-business and pro-jobs’ budget 2014

The budget 2014, with a projected expenditure of €80.5 million for the coming year, was adopted at a special meeting of the Galway City Council last Friday.

Following a lengthy debate on the various aspects of the draft budget a number of proposed amendments, put forward by Fine Gael, Fianna Fail, and Independent councillors, was passed with 10 in favour and five abstentions. Proposed amendments put forward by the Labour Party councillors group was defeated following a vote.
