Anonymous businessman to pay for Direct Provision students’ third level education

A Galway businessman has come forward and offered to pay for the third level education of two students in the Direct Provision system who were not in a position to fund their courses as their status would mean paying sums of up to €10,000.

The businessman, who wished to remain anonymous but is said to be well-known, made the generous offer after media reports revealed that two students could not access third level education because of their parents’ status in this country despite achieving the Leaving Cert points required and being in the Irish education system for at least five years.

Information on more than 9,000 species inhabiting the Southern Ocean has been catalogued by scientists, including one from NUI Galway, in a new atlas which was launched in New Zealand on Monday.

Leading marine biologists and oceanographers from all over the world, including NUI Galway’s Dr Louise Allcock, spent the last four years compiling the information and creating the atlas which is one of the most thorough audits of its kind ever.

A symposium on youth development and sport, organised by UNESCO experts including several Galway academics and sportsmen, takes place in Croke Park today.The symposium is organised by three UNESCO Chairs in the field of youth studies from NUI Galway, University of Ulster, and Penn State University. It kicks off the Croke Park Classic Weekend, which will feature an American football clash between Penn State and University of Central Florida.

According to the symposium organisers, with half of the world’s population aged 25 or younger, there is a pressing need for innovative strategies to engage youth. And with 85 per cent of all youth living in less developed countries, active engagement of youth is essential to international security, stability, and regional capacity building.
