Galway Study Centre prepares for new term after another successful year

The 2015 - 2016 programme gets under way at Galway Study Centre from September 14. Bookings have been ongoing since early June for the weekly after school and Saturday classes which the study centre offers to Leaving Cert, fifth year, and Junior Cert students. Nearly all subjects are offered with a good choice of days and times available at Leaving Cert level. Study skills classes will also commence from Wednesday September 23 and will be run once a week for four weeks.

Supermac's creates another one hundred jobs at Kiltullagh Plaza, with more on the way

Galway received a jobs boost yesterday with the announcement by Supermac's founders Pat and Una McDonagh that 100 jobs are to be created at the country's latest motorway service station on the M6 at Kiltullagh. The couple will also employ a further 220 people in the future due to plans for three further plaza developments nationwide over the next two years.

Newcastle residents dismayed at NUIG plans for student residences

A large number of residents in Newcastle have expressed their displeasure at plans by NUI Galway to build additional student residences in the area. The college recently applied for permission to build the accommodation in Upper Newcastle and the proposed development consists of a five-storey block fronted by three four-storey blocks, to house more than 450 students. The residences are to be located between the existing Corrib Village and homes on Upper Newcastle road.

Women in Galway twice as likely to be unemployed as men according to new figures

Almost twice as many women as men have joined the Live Register in Galway in the last three months, as the trend in unemployment turns upwards again, according to recent figures from the CSO.

Sinn Féin Galway senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh said the latest CSO figures for April-June, which show 343,000 people across the State were signing on in July - twice as many as in 2008 at the outbreak of the economic collapse - “contradict the Government spin that the economy has ‘turned the corner’”.

USI urges students to get housed asap

The president of the Union of Students in Ireland [USI], Kevin Donoghue, has urged families to get ahead of the curve on student accommodation, by seeking and securing places for the semester ahead as soon as possible.

Speaking during a leaflet drop to promote the USI’s free rooms listing website, ‘homes.usi.ie’, Donoghue explained: “The earlier you secure your bed for the year, the more chance you have of getting good accommodation close to your college.
