Busiest year ever at Ireland West Airport as passenger numbers soar

016 has proven to be a record breaking year at Ireland West Airport with passenger numbers exceeding 730,000 for the first time in the airport’s 31-year history. In 2016, the annual number of passengers using the airport increased by seven per cent to 734,031, an increase of 48,563 passengers compared to 2015.

Mrs Bridget Fox, nee Mc Hugh, who for much of her long life owned and operated Fox’s Bar on Eyre Square, has passed away.
She was the grand old age of one hundred and three years and eight months. Retiring in her eightieth year she felt it was time to relax with her family. She was born in April 1913, before the Great War, The Easter Rising, The Civil War and had recollections of the Black and Tans in her childhood.

The School of Psychology and the School of Nursing and Midwifery at NUI Galway is conducting a research study on nursing staff’s experiences of burnout and how this impacts both their mental well-being and capacity to treat and care for the over 65-year-olds. All registered general nurses are invited to participate in the online study, and the findings will better inform future policies and interventions for trainee and qualified nursing staff in Ireland.

A “ridiculous situation” is how a Galway TD has characterised the “consistent delays in building a new health centre” on Inishbofin island, which has seen progress on the “urgently needed” facility halted for nearly a decade.
This is the view of Galway West TD and Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Island Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív, who has slammed the consistent delays in building a new health centre on the Connemara island.

AA Ireland is warning motorists to prepare for hazardous driving conditions in coming days, after Met Eireann advised that snow and icy conditions, as well as high winds, are expected across the country from this morning (Thursday).
Hail, sleet and snow affected the north of the country last night (Wednesday) before moving south throughout today, which could result in dangerous driving conditions during the morning rush hour. AA Ireland is advising motorists to slow down and allow extra braking distance when driving.

Three out of four Galway women eligible for free cervical cancer screening availed of the potentially life saving service in 2014/2015, according to a new report. The county was one in which CervicalCheck - The National Cervical Screening Programme reported a high uptake rate (75 per cent) among its target population of women aged 25 to 60 years. The objective of the programme for coverage over five years remains at 80 per cent.
