Lohan in drive to brings historic prints home to Galway

City councillor Mark Lohan is working with the City Heritage Officer and the National Museum of Ireland to bring 17 early 20th century prints of Menlo and Coolough villages back to Galway. The artworks are currently held in storage in the Museum of Country Life in Mayo and agreement is being made to commission copies and have the collection permanently displayed in Galway City.

Cllr Lohan stated these artworks provide an invaluable window into our heritage and social history in Galway.

The Centre for Pain Research at NUI Galway is currently recruiting people with chronic pain (pain that has lasted for 3 months or more) to take part in a trial of the ‘Pain Course’, a free online pain self-management programme. The study offers adults living with chronic pain the opportunity to avail of this eight-week Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy course, in the comfort of their own home.

The ‘Pain Course’ was developed by a team of experts at MacQuarie University in Sydney, Australia. The Centre for Pain Research at NUI Galway, in collaboration with the research team at MacQuarie University, is conducting a research trial of the ‘Pain Course’ with adults who experience chronic pain and live in Ireland. As many people with chronic pain are unable to access specialist pain management services, this course provides people with a programme that teaches them about and how to manage chronic pain, with clinician telephone support, in their own home.

The fourth annual Gathering of the Mannion Clan will take place in the village of Menlough in East Galway next weekend Friday and Saturday August 18-19 as National Heritage Week 2017 gets under way. Heritage will undoubtedly form the central theme of this year’s Mannion Rally, which will see the unveiling of new welcome name-stones bearing the village’s full Irish-language name Mionlach Uí Mhainnín (the small lough of the Mannions) on all approach roads.

This will be the culmination of a joint initiative involving Menlough Tidy Towns Committee and the Mannion Clan Association, whose mutual desire to acknowledge the history and heritage of Menlough and the surrounding area since medieval times was the driving force behind the venture.

The Managing Director of Supermac’s, Pat McDonagh, has said it is not acceptable that rural areas are allowed to decline while parents of young children commute long distances into already over-crowded cities.

“We need to identify the places of strategic economic importance and focus incentive on them,” Mr. McDonagh said. “Population statistics emerging from the earliest returns of the 2016 census suggest a huge concentration of people in cities with an almost equally large population commuting to these cities every day.
