Department deadline threatens important Harbour repair funding says Ó Cuív

Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Agriculture Éamon Ó Cuív TD says Government constraints put on funding to repair storm damaged piers and harbours could risk the completion of certain projects.

€7m was approved for 111 repair projects, but none of the money will be handed over to the relevant local authorities until all of the work has been carried out. The Department of Agriculture and the Marine has also stipulated that the repairs must be completed and the money drawn down by the end of this year.

HSE urges visits to undertheweather.ie as respiratory illness almost doubles in a week

The HSE is urging people to avail of its new website undertheweather.ie for advice on how to get better and when to consult a doctor, as rates of winter illnesses rise. According to the health body the incidence of one common winter illness, respiratory syncytial virus, has almost doubled in the last week.

RSV is the most common cause of severe respiratory illness among children under two years of age and, although most children recover well at home, it can also be the cause of hospital admissions due to acute respiratory illness in young children, according to GP and Irish College of General Practitioners lead on antimicrobial resistance, Dr Nuala O’Connor.

County heroes recognised at Cathaoirleach’s Community Awards ceremony

More than 250 people from Community and Voluntary groups from all around County Galway were honoured at the Cathaoirleach’s Community Awards ceremony last Thursday in the Claregalway Hotel. The Awards, previously called the Mayors Awards, recognise and celebrate community and voluntary activity around County Galway. Twelve awards were up for grabs after a public call for nominations was made back in October.

Galway Memorial Tree lights to be switched on tomorrow

The lights on the Galway Memorial Tree, located at Galway Hospice, will be switched on tomorrow (Friday) at 6pm by Mayor of Galway Donal Lyons.

Clare Quinn, who stole the show on last week’s Late Late Toy Show with her rendition of ‘Nessum Dorma’, will be the guest soloist at the event. The Kiltulla Community Choir will sing a selection of traditional and contemporary Christmas songs to set the festive spirit for the switching-on ceremony.

A Wilde night in the west

It is hard to believe that it is a decade since Oscar Wilde and Thomas Vilde took up residence outside Matt O’Flahertys on Williamsgate Street. A gift from the Estonian nation, in that period they have become the iconic face of modern Galway. Tonight a concert of Estonian music will be held to mark the occasion. I caught up with the happy Wildes as they sat outside a shop in the city centre.
