Volunteers needed for university cancer-fatigue survey

The School of Psychology at NUI Galway is currently inviting adults who have completed their treatment for cancer at least six months ago, for a series of focus groups on the experience of cancer-related fatigue in cancer survivors.

The group discussions will offer participants the opportunity to share their experiences with, and thoughts about cancer-related fatigue, in a casual environment and with complete confidentiality. Persistent views and personal experiences are extremely valuable and their input will greatly help the researcher in the development of an intervention for individuals who suffer with fatigue after their treatment has ended. They may also benefit from discussing their fatigue with others who also experience persistent fatigue.

The creation of a municipal art gallery and a large scale venue for major concerts and events is vital if Galway is to put in a serious challenge for the title of European Capital of Culture.

The city’s 2005 bid was unsuccessful due to the absence of such facilities, but city manager Brendan McGrath said it is City Hall’s “intention to remedy the lack of a municipal gallery” while the issue of a large scale venue “can be dealt with in a variety of ways”.

As the Seanad debated the removal of psychiatric beds from mental health units, including St Brigid’s Hospital in Ballinasloe, campaign groups vowed to continue their fight until an independent review is granted.

Speaking minutes before the debate was due to start at 4pm yesterday, Arthur Carr, member of Galway East Life Support Group and East Galway Mental Health Action Group told the Advertiser that campaigners “will not give up the fight until the last breath is gone” and that a vigil will be maintained at St Brigid’s in Ballinasloe until “politicians see sense”.
