Coláiste Ghobnait's Tara O'Brien and David Barbotin (Preab Ltd), who were placed third overall in the national final, created speakers for mobile phones which are made from 100 per cent recyclable materials. Preab Ltd was mentored by Meadbh Seoighe from Údarás na Gaeltachta.

Rabbitte calls for re-examination of rural and social scheme rules

Funding for schemes such as the Rural Social Scheme and Tús are in danger of being slashed under the new funding model being proposed by the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Regina Doherty.

This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway East TD Anne Rabbitte who accused Minister Doherty of aiming to "cut the schemes without fully considering the benefit that these programmes have on their local communities”. She said she was "very worried" that Minister Doherty is favouring Jobpath over schemes such as the RSS and Tús.

'Vast majority' of passport applications are processed on time, says Cannon

The "vast majority" of online applications for passports are being processed within seven working days, "well ahead of target", according to Fine Gael Galway East TD and Minister for the Diaspora and International Development, Ciaran Cannon.

Minister Cannon was responding to Opposition criticism of the turnaround time for passport applications. He said that, as of March 20, the average turnaround time for renewal applications, submitted through An Post Passport Express, stands at 16 working days. Average processing times for all categories of passport application are updated regularly on www.dfa.ie/passport and reflect "actual average turnaround time".
