She was a vivacious, witty young woman, intelligent, interested in everything, passionate about her country, and determined to make her own way in a man’s world. He was an elderly, brilliant, and very eccentric scientist. Yet these two became friends, and she has left us a vivid and very funny account of their late-blooming friendship.

She was Sydney Owenson (c1776-1859), the daughter of Robert Owenson, an Irish actor born in County Mayo, and Jane Hill, an English Protestant whom he had met while on tour. Robert had changed his name from MacOwen to Owenson for professional purposes – O’s and Mac’s signalled too clearly one’s origins. He established a music hall in Fishamble Street, Dublin, where plays and songs were performed in Irish.

Galway sole traders can avail of interns under JobBridge scheme

Allowing sole traders to take on interns under the JobBridge National Internship Scheme will give “the maximum number of people the training and skills necessary to succeed in the workplace”.

This is the view of Labour Galway West TD Derek Nolan who says the extension of the scheme will allow people on Jobseeker’s Benefit to gain “vital experience in niche organisations” such as solicitor’s offices, hairdresser’s, etc, which are run by sole traders.

The County Buildings

In June 1802, the County Infirmary finally opened. Some 35 years before, it was ordered in council at a meeting of the corporation, “That a committee consisting of the principal gentlemen of the town, be, and are accordingly appointed to enquire and find out a proper place within the county of the town of Galway for erecting a public infirmary or hospital for the reception of the poor, sick and disabled persons”. The Governors of the Erasmus Smith School granted two acres of ground gratis for ever, but it still took 35 years to build.

Online business course for jobseekers tonight

South West Gnó Skillnet is running an innovative training programme for jobseekers this evening in conjunction with a Galway based firm. Taking place in the Oranmore Lodge Hotel from 7pm to 10pm, this introductory programme will outline to participants how they can build a successful web-based business without needing external web design or IT support.

It launches a follow on 10 week programme, consisting of three hours per week, where participants can apply the process and create an online business with support from tutors. All the necessary steps from developing a site concept right through to making a consistent income on the web will be covered. It is designed for people who have basic computer skills and the determination to succeed.

Two months jail for abuse at social welfare office

A Newcastle man who, during an ‘alcohol rampage’, abusively demanded dole money from staff at a social welfare office and, after getting no joy, relieved himself by urinating on the exterior of the building in the presence of gardai was jailed for two months this week.

At a court sitting held in June of this year, Stephen Rabbitte (25) with an address at 96 Inishannagh Park, Newcastle, Galway, pleaded guilty to threatening and abusive behaviour at Sandyvale Lawn, Headford Road, and to threatening and abusive behaviour at St Augustine Street, on February 2, 2011. Charges for being intoxicated in a public place, obstruction, and failing to obey Garda orders had been withdrawn.
