Van overloading undermines tech advances

Advances in van safety technology could be undermined by dangerous overloading, warns the British Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). If it is true in Britain, it is at least similar, if not worse, here in Ireland.

In Britain almost nine in 10 (88.5 per cent ) of the 2,381 vans weighed last year by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency were found to be overloaded, a worse record than the previous year in which 84 per cent of the 3,337 checked were illegal.

The tyres are the only parts of your vehicle that come in contact with the road yet for many of us, they are not high on the agenda when comes to our cars' safety and performance. However, making sure that your tyres are fit for purpose could be the difference in saving your life and the lives of other road users.

According to the Road Safety Authority's (RSA) website, on average every year, 14 road deaths saw tyres as a contributing factor in the crash. By law, it is the driver's responsibility to make sure that the vehicle complies with all legal requirements and that it is roadworthy. Failure to comply with tyre safety regulations can result in a fine of €80 and up to four penalty points upon conviction.

Recovering economy drives new registrations

Official statistics released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry show new car registrations for the month of April were up 10 per cent.

Some 10,408 new cars were registered compared to 9,451 in April 2015, while new cars registrations year to date are up 26 per cent on the same period last year.
