Basilico at The Old School House, Clarinbridge

Thu, Mar 10, 2011

I have been asked many times if I knew why Basilico had opened a second restaurant in Clarinbridge, just a couple of miles away from its main operation in Oranmore. It did seem a strange move in these uncertain times, so I decided to ask the owners what lay behind this venture. The answer has many parts but the main reason is that they have been so busy every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in Oranmore they have had to refuse bookings every week. That kind of problem is one most restaurateurs would give their eye teeth to have. They also liked the building and the though of having a ‘restaurant only’ premises appealed. However this in no way will affect Oranmore where they will continue to serve the same food at the same prices in the bar and restaurant areas.

Revolutionary Image peels dramatically improve your skin after only thirty minutes

Thu, Mar 10, 2011

Image Skincare is the newest cosmeceutical line to be available at Therapie Clinic in Galway.

Cosmeceutical skincare is where pharmaceutical meets cosmetic. These products contain high levels of active ingredients such as glycolic acids, enzymes, retinol, salycylic acid, amino acids, and peptides. However it is the delivery system of these ingredients that is the key to how effective they are, as well as the skincare consultation and analysis that determines the right products and treatments being prescribed for each individual client.

Ten steps to good health

Thu, Mar 10, 2011

1. Eat healthily. Try to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. When doing your grocery shop stock up on healthy snacks, such as rice cakes, celery, cucumber and low-fat cheese. Try to incorporate wholemeal foods, bread and pasta and low fat yoghurt into your diet, too. Avoid sugary and fried foods and salt as much as possible. Grill, bake, microwave but steer away from frying. Watch out for the hidden fats in creams and sauces as well.

In the 19th century Nuns Island was part of the industrial heartland of Galway. Salthill garden will remember the ‘kindness of strangers’

Thu, Mar 10, 2011

In one of the strangest ironies of fate that I ever heard was the day, early 2006, when the renowned Irish singer Eleanor Shanley called into Charlie Lennon’s Cuan Recording Studios in Spiddal. Eleanor, with her distinctive, rich lyrical voice, was looking for a new song. She talked to her friend Éamonn Goggin, a sound engineer at Cuan. Éamonn’s passion was music. He loved nothing more than sharing his knowledge with friends. He enthused about a song written by Mike Scott of the Waterboys and Anthony Thistlethwaite, called ‘Strange Boat’. It was written some years ago, but it was a great song, that just needed some updating, a new look. ‘ We’re sailing on a Strange Boat/ Heading for a strange shore/ Carrying the strangest cargo / That was ever hauled aboard....’ Éamonn said it was ideally suited for Eleanor’s voice.

Notes for the season

Thu, Mar 03, 2011

In order to be taken seriously in this climate, we have gone back to the notion that keeping up personal appearances is important. To be taken seriously at work, or indeed when looking for work, everyone is upping their game to remain competitive.

Men are possibly the best at getting value for money, and they are very clever when buying clothing. Most men demand that each piece in their wardrobe works very hard for them. I was curious how they do this, and sat down with Sinead Donnellan, Brown Thomas menswear manager, and asked her to reveal of a few of men’s secrets, in the hopes we girls could learn something.
