Goats Lane Café, what a great name for a café and so easy to remember. It is apparently the original name for the road down by the side of Kelly’s post office and shop in Clarinbridge. This new venture has just been opened in the last couple of weeks by Deirdre and Phyllis Flanagan and is an oasis of home cooked treats. Previously I have bought cakes, brownies, and breads from Deirdre and Phyllis at various markets in Kinvara, Oranmore, Clarinbridge, and Ardrahan, and often times, with the rain pouring down around them, I thought, fair play to them. No more setting up their tent and perhaps getting drenched while trying to bring their goodies to their customers.

When the Kilkenny essayist Herbert Butler came to write about the burning of Bridget Cleary in 1960 he acknowledged that Slievenaman was always known for its mysterious past. Looking across the Tipperary border from his fields, he described it as ‘a pale blue hump with the soft, rounded contours of ancient hills whose roughness have been smoothed away by time. Finn MacCool lived there as did Oisin and Oscar, and 50 beautiful maidens, who gave it its name The Mountain of Women.’ In Bridget Cleary’s time, it was also the home of Denis Ganey, the local herbal doctor, and a man respected and feared for his knowledge of fairylore. It was to this house that Michael Cleary ran to on the afternoon of Thursday March 14 1895. He pleaded for a cure for his wife whom he believed had been taken by the fairies, and replaced by a woman that was not the Bridget Boland he had married.

1. Take charge of your time. If days just seem to slip away and it is often mid afternoon before you make any headway on your tasks then you are not in control. Begin by monitoring your time, this will help you pinpoint where any problems lie. Get a sheet of paper and make three columns with headings such as Time Started, Activity, and Time Taken. Write down everything you do over a few days.
You will realise very quickly how your hours and days are being gobbled up. How long do you spend on the phone, for instance, or watching television, travelling to and from work, searching for important documents you’ve mislaid or organising the children’s homework for the next day?

An old Galwegian gave us this interesting study of the bottom of Quay Street, and of Blake’s Castle in particular. Blake’s Cattle was one of a number featured on the 1651 map of Galway. It had at one time belonged to the O’Halloran sept, but then the Anglo-Norman Blake family took it over. It was forfeited by them in 1641 and was granted to a family named Morgan from Monksfield.

On Monday March 4 1895, Bridget Cleary, walked up a hill to Kylenagranagh, the home of her father’s cousin Jack Dunne, who lived with his wife Kate, to sell eggs. The Dunne’s house, less than two miles from her slate-roofed labourer’s cottage at Ballyvadlea, Co Tipperary, was near an ancient circular mound of earth, or a ring fort, still known in rural Ireland as a ‘fairy fort’. Maybe it was because of the location of his house, or because of his skill as a story teller, a ‘Shanachie’, and that he had a limp, that Dunne had the reputation for being ‘an old man who is fairy-ridden’. People believed the local legend that he was once ‘chased up to his home by a man in black, and a woman in white’. He had knowledge of incantations, charms, and spells, and was sometimes consulted for a cure for animal or female sicknesses.

In recent years men’s attitudes towards healthy living has been changing for the better as the link between expanding waistlines and health difficulties such as diabetes, heart complications, and other problems become more apparent.
Traditionally men have often been quite shy about seeking advice on health issues, not knowing where to turn to for the help and motivation they need, and difficulties in finding the appropriate practical advice on healthy eating can lead to many giving up before they have even begun. Receiving the appropriate advice, monitoring, and motivation is particularly vital for men, especially if they have the added complications of obesity and health problems, and this is where The Orsmond Clinic in Oranmore has succeeded, working with clients to change their lives, step by step, for the better.
