The Spanish Arch from Long Walk

Thu, Apr 18, 2019

Long Walk was originally built as a wall by the Eyre family in order to construct a mud berth. Among those who lived there around the time this photograph was taken were Tom Gannon, Sarah O’Donnellon, Mrs Hosty, and Pateen Green. There was an entry through a large archway into a courtyard known as Green’s Alley and the five houses there were occupied by the Andersons, McDonaghs, Canavans, Gorhams, and Finnertys. A Mrs McDonagh lived next door in a building known as The Hall and further on lived Mrs Lee, John Folan, Bideen Joyce, Ella McDonagh, Mrs Folan, and Mike Walsh.

Why are so many Irish students now opting to study in the Netherlands?

Thu, Apr 18, 2019

There are now more than 1,000 Irish students registered on degree programmes, taught through English, in Dutch universities. Dutch admissions officers are reporting to EUNICAS that this number is likely to be significantly higher this September.

This phenomenon is radically changing the palette of third-level opportunities available to Irish students who can now access a wide range of programmes in institutions with a very high international reputation, at a cost lower than studying at home. “The numbers enrolling in Dutch universities, and in other continental European universities, represents a refreshing opportunity for Irish students seeking an alternative outside the troubled third-level sector in Ireland. Significant numbers of students are rejecting offers from high-points courses, to accept offers from Dutch universities,” said Guy Flouch of EUNiCAS (www.eunicas.ie), the Irish-based European Universities Application and Support service. So why The Netherlands? Firstly, these are excellent programmes in highly-ranked (11 are higher ranked than UCD) and well-resourced institutions.

People of the Tribes: Meet Marguerite.

Tue, Apr 16, 2019

I always wanted to follow my heart in life. It was just one of those things. I studied biochemistry and then psychology, but something was missing. I loved what I did, but I wasn't in love with it. I suppose, one day I just said to myself, if you are going to really find your thing, you better do it now. Time is moving along. I just did it. I don't know why, but I switched on the laptop and wrote a children's book.

Planting out sweet peas

Mon, Apr 15, 2019

If you’re thinking of growing sweet peas this year, this weekend is a great time to plant them in the garden - and I can’t think of a better way to spend the bank holiday than prepping the garden for the summer season ahead. You can grow them from seed, in which case you would need to have sown them indoors or under glass in January or early February, but most garden centres are stocking young plants about now. Either way, make sure they are hardened off before you plant them outside, to lessen the shock they’ll get from moving outside into a colder environment.

A pig fair in Eyre Square

Thu, Apr 11, 2019

Hely Dutton, in his survey of County Galway in 1824, wrote: “In every considerable town there is a market for fat cattle and sheep once a week. The earliest cattle fairs in Galway were held at Fairhill (hence the name) but in the 19th century, they moved to Eyre Square. It was where the farmer sold his product to other farmers, to butchers and to visiting dealers. It was where town and country met, where the rural people would come to town to sell, then buy whatever necessities they needed before returning home."
