Hair dye and your health

Thu, Jun 13, 2013

A number of scientific studies in recent years have linked chemical ingredients in personal care products to adverse health effects. International studies cite the ingredients in hair dyes as contributing to the incidence of certain types of cancer. Sourcing chemical-free hair colour and cosmetics has led Simply Natural, an Irish owned company, to bring Naturigin organic based hair colour to Ireland. It is paraben and ammonia free. Parabens (a preservative linked to breast cancer) are present in most hair colour brands. Ammonia is widely known to thin the hair.

A visit to Fluntern cemetery

Thu, Jun 13, 2013

On a late afternoon last August, my friend John Hill drove me across the city of Zurich, climbing the suburban heights until we stopped at the gates of Fluntern Cemetery. We walked up the last incline to where, among the trees and billard-table lawns, we saw the Joyces’ grave. There was no mistaking it. Just above the grave is the Giacometti-like sculpture of the writer himself, the work of American artist Milton Hebald. There James Joyce sits, in characteristic pose, deep in conversation, head tilted, one leg resting on the other knee, cigarette poised, his slim cane delicately balanced. Someone once remarked that he held his cane like a musical instrument.

Summer occasions and parties are in full swing and most of us are in the lookout for ‘the’ outfit. On the Wine Shelf...

Marques de Alarcon Vino de la Tierra de Castilla Tempranillo/Syrah 2011 Spain (M&S, €7)

Most of the big retailers now have a budget shelf that is bringing the price of a bottle of wine continuously down a notch or two, and this particular pick is part of the Marks & Spencer range. As a reasonable example of what you look for in a wine suitable for summer drinking at an affordable price, this is made from a blend of Tempranillo and Syrah grapes grown on the central Spanish plain of La Mancha. With a decent amount of blackberry fruit on the nose with hints of smoke and crimson, it has enough mulberry, plum, and blackberry fruit on the palate to satisfy the harshest of critics at this price. Medium-bodied with fresh acidity, it also has a decent length. In essence, the perfect tipple to go with a spicy summer pizza or a light tomato pasta.
