Sabor at Corry’s Food Hall, Loughrea

Thu, Apr 14, 2011

Over the years Loughrea has not had many new cafés/restaurants, and now in the space of less than six months, I visited a third new venture. The Corry family has had a butcher’s business in Loughrea for many years and just two years ago they made the brave move to a new architect-designed building beside the old railway station. The café is situated on an open mezzanine upstairs and is now producing some really good food. Like several places I talked about recently, it is on its third incarnation, the new head chef and proprietor Nigel along with his wife Magaly at front of house, has I believe got the right formula and range of products.

Homeowners improving rather than moving

Thu, Apr 14, 2011

Continuing uncertainty over property prices has resulted in many home owners opting to upgrade and improve their existing homes rather than move and incur the cost of selling. One local company that has benefited significantly from this trend is Tobermore Concrete. Tobermore’s Paving and Walling Centre in Galway is an example of how innovation and a high level of customer service can lead to very strong sales.

Headache and migraine

Thu, Apr 14, 2011

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have been used to relieve headaches and migraines for thousands of years.

In traditional Chinese medicine, there are many causes of headaches or migraine, such as rising of liver yang (stress and emotional problems), blood deficiency (failure of enough blood to nourish the head correctly: dizziness, palpitations, and tiredness), and blood stagnation (always occurs in patients with a history of external injury). By using the natural remedies, traditional Chinese medicine can treat headache and migraine by using acupuncture, acupressure, and herbal medicine, which can calm the liver yang, normalise the yin blood, and disperse blood stasis. It is regarded as the ideal way to root out the causes of the problem.

Thanks for the memories

Thu, Mar 31, 2011

Seapoint Ballroom was officially opened at 10pm on July 17 1949 by Joe Costelloe, Mayor of Galway. Noel Finan bought the site from Jim and Mary Cremin, who were brother and sister. They ran a famous seawater baths there, a kind of health spa of its day. At the time Salthill was a small village with a few hotels, B&Bs, and shops. It also had the Hangar which was run by John Allen, but it closed down in Race Week when dancing moved into a marquee in Eyre Square. At the time it was 1s 6d into the Hangar for women and 1s 9d for men.

Can Ming the Merciless save our turf cutting heritage?

Thu, Mar 31, 2011

I have been watching the progress of Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan with some amusement, and admiration for a number of years. Amusement because of his long running campaign to legalise cannabis, which has to be a no-hoper. He has been convicted on several occasions for possession of the drug, but undaunted, he sent a beautifully rolled cannabis cigarette to every politician in the Oireachtas as part of his campaign, pleading for them to enjoy a smoke, inhale deeply, and support his cause. That man doesn’t know the meaning of ‘no’.
