NUI Galway launches new €13 million genomics data science centre

NUI Galway has officially launched a new SFI Centre for Research Training in Genomics Data Science at a conference this week. The NUI Galway-led centre has received €13 million in funding from Science Foundation Ireland to train 115 PhD students over the next seven years in the analysis of big genomic data sets, enabling them to take up future high-skills careers across the range of genomics applications.

Music school gears up for tenth anniversary

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Maoin Cheoil na Gaillimhe. Over the past decade the school has grown from simple beginnings to a substantial music education provider in the city. It has already trained almost 20 new teachers for the city with professional diplomas, and another 200 primary school teachers have been certified in new and exciting ways to work with students.

The school currently operates from its base in the Presentation National School and in its satellite school Scoil Mhuire in Moycullen. Between them there are more than 20 staff providing 400 budding young musicians with instrumental lessons, and almost 1,200 more on its Colourstrings outreach programme, teaching music in primary schools. This year, with the help of funding from the Lifes2Good Foundation the school is planning to build a multi-campus platform that will see lessons rolled out right across the city, for children on both sides of the Corrib, from September 2020.

Places available on all further education courses in GCC

School leavers and mature students who are considering Galway Community College as their further education destination in September 2019 can apply and register online now on all QQI accredited courses. GCC's courses offer a mix of practical and portfolio work and work experience. They are designed as a step towards skilled employment or progression to higher education institutes. There are no CAO points required for further education courses, and after completion you can apply for more than 1,200 CAO courses that will accept a QQI award for progression purposes.
