Salthill village, 1920

Thu, May 21, 2020

It is hard to believe that this is what the centre of Salthill village looked like exactly 100 years ago. The house on the left belonged to a Mr Kelleher who was a member of the RIC. It later became a guest house called the Rockville which eventually expanded into a small hotel and, like many such premises in Salthill, it was fully licensed. It had high standards, the porter always wore a white coat and the waitresses wore proper uniforms. The distinguished writer Donal Mac Amhlaigh worked here for a while during the fifties.

Covid 19 pandemic - impact on Leaving Cert students

Thu, May 14, 2020

There has been a rapid shift in students’ lives from “the norm” to one of uncertainty due to the Covid-19 pandemic which is impacting people all over the world. The pandemic has caused increased levels of stress, anxiety, and fear for individuals and communities. Students are experiencing a number of difficulties dealing with the many layers created by Covid-19. While efforts are being taken to contain the spread of Covid-19, which is critical at this point, there are a number of concerns and issues being raised psychologically for people and in particular students. Leaving Cert students are dealing with a disruption to their typical way of learning and a level of uncertainty surrounding achieving their goals and aspirations.

There have been increased levels of anxiety, worry, concern, hopelessness, and despair for many students. Difficulties have been further exacerbated for students already experiencing mental health issues. It is natural for some students to experience strong emotional reactions to the changes that have occurred since the closure of schools in March 2020. GMIT would like to reassure students and parents that we are mindful of the types of unique experiences students may present with in the next academic year.

The man from New York

The first time Lady Gregory met John Quinn was on Sunday August 31 1902 at a Feis Ceol she had partly organised in the memory of Ó Raifteirí the poet. Gardenwise | Clothe your Walls with Clematis

Wed, May 13, 2020

I’ve always loved clematis ever since I started gardening – a wall or fence completely smothered in its blooms is a lovely sight to behold. As a garden designer, I include them in planting plans for clients quite a lot – depending on the individual garden (and the garden owner ) - because, if chosen carefully, clematis can make a glorious addition to any garden.

'My child’s health inspired my new career in nutrition'

Thu, May 07, 2020

I decided to study nutrition at CNM after experiencing the impact diet changes had on my little girl’s health. She was very poorly between the age of one and three, with frequent trips to the hospital due to recurrent chest infections and asthma-like symptoms. She was prescribed corticosteroids, antibiotics, and a variety of inhalers, but I was frustrated at simply managing my daughter’s symptoms with medication and not actually seeing any progress in her health. We received no nutritional or lifestyle advice.

'In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity'

Thu, May 07, 2020

In the words of Albert Einstein, “In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity”, while these words may not currently fully resonate with Leaving Cert students, and their families, there may be opportunities available which could have otherwise been missed. Leaving Certificate students considering attending third level in the autumn will have given some consideration to financial implications; if they haven’t, then their parents probably have. It may take time to apply for scholarships and/or grants, and you could take this opportunity to explore potential financial supports which could be available to support you when studying in third level. The Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) is certainly an opportunity for many, along with specific support available directly from your third level institution of choice.
