Win win! Here is the article:

Galway awaits its fate in ‘a state of nervousness and excitement’

Thu, Jul 16, 2020

Following the victory of King William’s army at Aughrim July 12 1691, the people of Galway awaited their fate in fear and uncertainty. William’s Dutch general Godert de Ginkel, had moved from his headquarters at Athenry, and was now on his way to subdue the town. He had shown ruthless determination in his dealings with the Irish Jacobite army; the citizens must have expected nothing less.

In Hardiman’s famous history however, he digresses from his narrative at this point, to include the bizarre story of Balldearg O’Donnell. ‘A persecuted people will grasp at every shadow in expectation of deliverance’, he sagely remarks; in what a pathetic man, as we shall see, did Galway place its misguided hope for deliverance.

Gardenwise | Sounds of the Sea

Tue, Jul 14, 2020

A coastal garden is usually a challenge, and being based on the western edge of our beautiful island, a lot of my clients have gardens by the sea. The biggest challenge is usually the wind – not just its strength and frequency, but the salt it carries with it which can be so harmful to sensitive leaves and flowers. Being the west of Ireland, rainfall is high and soil by the sea often tends to be sandy, full of rocks and low in nutrients. But there are few amongst us who don’t love the sea – and that can often lead to the biggest challenge of all – how to create a sheltered garden without losing your view of the rolling waves.

Middle Street, c1920

Thu, Jul 09, 2020

Our photograph shows Olly Shea from High Street with his two cousins, the Brays from Father Griffin Road. They are standing in Middle Street which looks very wide with nothing parked there. The building on the far left was a tenement which later became a timber yard. Next door was a store which was owned by O’Gormans. The building beside that, with the white gable, was Tim Murphy’s; he ran a second-hand clothes shop there and carded wool. Next door was another tenement which was later taken over by Corbett’s timber yard.

Advice on running as you age

Thu, Jul 09, 2020

It is no secret that our bodies change as we age. However, while you may feel that your days as a whippet-like twenty-something are behind you, it does not necessarily mean that you are no longer able to perform at your best. As the old adage goes, ‘age is just a number’, and many runners find that through a combination of smart training and experience, they actually flourish once they hit the veteran ranks.

Let’s sound it out

Thu, Jul 09, 2020

One of the most rewarding feelings a person can experience is that of knowing you are helping people to better themselves. This is exactly the feeling I myself experienced every Tuesday during the college year after completing my hour of reading with the children of fourth class at a primary school in Galway city. Being able to play a part in a child’s education, especially during his/her formative years, is a responsibility that I do not take lightly. Knowing that I am helping these children, many of whom do not receive reading support at home or have little access to resources such as books to develop their education and enhance their reading abilities, is definitely a privilege.
