Merlin Park - An epilogue

Merlin Park House was a large late Georgian pile surrounded by trees, but built on a sufficient height that it enjoyed views of Galway Bay. It was originally built in the early 19th century by the influential Blake family, who were renowned for throwing wild parties and hunting with the hounds.

The Church of St James, Barna

The first church in the Barna area that we know of was a small stone building with a thatched roof on the right of the road down to Silver Strand, just opposite the entrance to Tobar Éanna. You can still see some of the remains there. It was in use until December 1839. On June 4, 200 adults were confirmed by Bishop Browne there.

The church in our photograph was named after St James and was built in 1830s on the main Barna Road. The first Mass there was celebrated on January 5, 1840. It was a T-shaped structure, rather than cruciform, with a small sacristy attached to the top of the T. It was easier to construct and the sacristy was placed behind the sanctuary. It was typical of churches built after Catholic Emancipation and it was paid for and built by the local landlords, the Lynch family from Barna House. There was a gallery level in the east end of the nave which was reached by a timber stairs. This and the entrance porch and floor were additions to the original basic church. In a number of similar churches there was a room either over or under the sacristy where the priest actually lived.

GCC's tutors are continually developing new courses and modules in line with industry trends in employment and links to higher education. The new science course, biomedical science and laboratory studies, introduced last September, had to limit its intake due to the high volumes of applicants in 2016. Level 6 business and Level 5 equine studies have also had strong uptake last year with Level 6 equine studies being introduced in September 2017.

Resistance is not accepting, rebelling against or fighting back. This can be seen in all areas of life. It is wanting things to be, as I believe they should be. It is believing that I know best as to how my life, and the lives of others, should be (played out). It a form of God complex, some would say! Non – resistance on the other hand , is the absolute and complete acceptance of life as it is and as it unfolds. It is submitting to life.

St Nicholas’ Parochial Primary School is a co-educational, multi-denominational, child-centred, school with a long tradition of serving the youth of Galway. It is centrally located in Woodquay (beside The Town Hall Theatre) and due to this central location, the pupils have the opportunity to attend many different educational events held in The Town Hall Theatre, Dubray Book Shop, The Black Box, Galway City Museum, Galway City Library, and many other interesting locations.
