Early bird catches a great two course meal at Fat Freddy's

Thu, Feb 27, 2020

When it comes to eating out there are two aspects of the meal that will make or break the experience — the quality of the food, and the size of the dent the price will leave in our wallets. Other requirements, although important, are still considered secondary to these feast fundamentals.

For more than 30 years Fat Freddy's restaurant has been delighting the palates of locals and tourists alike with a superb menu of tastes of Italy and beyond, and of course, home. And with the restaurant's amazing new early bird menu, hungry punters will leave with full stomachs and not-so-empty pockets. Operating from Sunday to Thursday, from 4pm until late, customers can choose between a starter and a main or a main and dessert for the great price of €19.50.

The power merchants who ruled Galway

Thu, Feb 20, 2020

Under Norman rule Galway rapidly developed from an obscure village into an important seaport with trade contacts all over Europe. This transformation was entirely due to the merchant community who made themselves into an oligarchy who not only owned and directed the town’s trade, but completely controlled the municipal government, the election of mayors, and, uniquely, the appointment of priests and wardens to St Nicholas’ Collegiate church. They enjoyed total power. They lived in opulent houses, many of which had elaborately carved doorways, secure within the walls of the town, indifferent to the Gaelic natives who were kept firmly outside the gates.*

Mindful self-compassion training for wellbeing

Thu, Feb 20, 2020

Our mental attitudes, beliefs, and expectations can have a big influence on whether we thrive and prosper or stagnate and decline. Rick Hanson, an eminent neuropsychologist, describes how the brain has a negativity bias designed to keep us safe rather than happy. He says that this makes our brain like Velcro for bad experience and Teflon for good experience.

An example of this negativity can be seen in how we often relate to ourselves with harsh attitudes of self-criticism. But a harsh, self-critical, inner voice can undermine our self-confidence and self-esteem and lead to feelings of guilt and shame that undermine our mental wellbeing. This often results in higher levels of stress, anxiety, and low mood.
