Thu, Jan 19, 2023
Anyone who has had, or has a family member who has had, a cancer diagnosis knows the turmoil it often brings into their lives. For many people, it can disrupt their everyday lives in unexpected ways. Medical appointments, tests and treatments form a new routine, changing the usual rhythms of work, exercise, hobbies and family life. Patients and family members may find themselves feeling scared, confused, anxious or uncertain about everything. The emotional and mental impacts might be just as difficult as dealing with the physical demands of cancer treatment. Living well again after a cancer diagnosis can involve acknowledging these mental and emotional impacts, as well as developing coping strategies to help deal with them. Based on more than 20 year’s experience in providing support for cancer patients and their families, Cancer Care West, for World Cancer Day, is running a webinar on 'Learning To Live Well After A Cancer Diagnosis'. Specialists in the field of psycho-oncology will speak on a range of topics and take questions from those attending. The webinar will be broadcast via Zoom on Tuesday 31st January at 11am so anyone can register to attend and participate from the comfort of their own home. Cancer Care West encourages patients and their families to watch together, and questions can be sent in in advance and raised anonymously or asked on the day. To register simply call 074 96 01901 or sign up at www.cancercarewest.ie.

The construction of the Eglinton was on a scale not seen before in Salthill, and it extended the village to the west. It came at a time when locals were beginning to promote the village as a resort, a destination for tourists.

There have been violent storms before and since the Big Wind of Sunday 6 to Monday 7 January 1839, but it was generally agreed at the time that nothing comparable could be remembered by the oldest inhabitants of this island.
It began with people noticing that despite a period of dull, cold weather, with light snow showers in the afternoon of that Sunday, it became noticeably warm with a light breeze. By late afternoon it was noted that the air ‘felt like air in a hot house’. About 9 pm strong westerly winds swept over the entire country, developing into hurricane force which raged from about midnight until it finally subsided at about 5am the following morning.

Christmas Trees as they came to be now started around the late 1400s into the 1500s. In what’s now Germany (was the Holy Roman Empire then), the Paradise Tree had more decorations on it (sometimes communion wafers, cherries and later pastry decorations of stars, bells, angels, etc. were added) and it even got a new nickname the ‘Christbaum’ or ‘Christ Tree’.
The trees became very popular throughout the country from the mid 1840s, when reports of ‘the Royal tree’ were printed in newspapers. In 1848, a drawing of “The Queen’s Christmas tree at Windsor Castle” was published in the Illustrated London News. It showed Queen Victoria, her German Husband Prince Albert and their young children around a tree which was set-up on a table. The drawing was republished in Godey’s Lady’s Book, Philadelphia in December 1850 (but they removed the Queen’s crown and Prince Albert’s moustache to make it look ‘American’!).
