FCL Galway is offering Junior Certificate maths classes on a one-to-one basis and there are a few limited places remaining. The classes are delivered online, but Frank Murphy will meet the students and parents in person initially to explain exactly how the classes are formatted and how they can gain maximum benefit from the tuition.
Many students in the early months of secondary school really struggle with the pace and content of maths class. They may have found maths in primary school manageable, but all of a sudden, things have really picked up and they are onto a new topic without having fully grasped the last one. In larger classes and in unfamiliar surroundings they are often reluctant to ask for clarification. The maths course is so extensive that as the teachers push on, students often get left behind.

The first formal meeting of the Board of Guardians of the Galway Workhouse took place in the Town Hall on July 3, 1839, and the building opened on March 2, 1842, one of many such workhouses built around the country. On March 16, the first pauper died from old age and destitution. The numbers of inmates gradually increased to 313 by May 1845, after which the Famine made a huge impact on the project. It was originally designed for 800 destitute persons but this quickly increased to 1,000. Included in the complex was an infirmary for sick paupers but this rapidly became the hospital for the city’s poor.
