On August 4 1914, Lt Col Henry Jourdain, Commander of the Connaught Rangers in Renmore Barracks, Galway, received mobilisation orders which changed the lives of thousands of families throughout the city and county. Urgent appeals for recruits were sent out. Hundreds of young men began arriving from all over Connacht. Temporary military camps were set up outside the barracks to cater for the recruits.

My great grandmother, Elizabeth Ellam, was killed on the RMS Leinster when on October 10 1918, exploded and sank following a ruthless German submarine attack shortly after the ship had departed Dun Laoghaire, on her way to Holyhead in Wales. It was practically one month to the day before World War I was declared officially over.

My name is Carrie Budds. I am a proud Cork woman who was adopted by the amazing city & people of Galway more than a decade ago. In the late 1990s, I studied for my degree in Limerick and by a happy coincidence, I ended up living with a group of mad Galwegians. And from then, all I wanted was to have a “Galway passport”, which I think I can safely say I have now. My favourite thing about Galway is the lifestyle balance it embraces. For a cold, wet swamp on the west coast of the most Western part of Europe, it is one of the most active places I’ve lived. As a Personal Trainer, I love seeing people being active, especially outdoors. There are always people out cycling, running, walking, skate-boarding or swimming at Blackrock, even on days when the wind is blowing them sideways. And there is always a festival, culture night or other events to feed the mind too. There’s always something going on! I also love how easy it is to get around (though I know some people will cry “but the TRAFFIC!!”). I cycle as much as possible, and try to encourage other people to do the same with our regular Mindful Commute days in the city. It is often faster to get around on your own steam than in the car. I see myself living here until I’m auld shtock, and love the idea that my daughter Easkey will grow up in such a diverse, active and accepting city. H’on the Tribesmen (unless they’re playing the Rebels of course!)

The first concerted move to improve Salthill (that I know of) was in 1882 when funds were collected locally and the Salthill Improvement Company was set up to improve the resort. The prevention of pollution was a priority. The company had its ups and downs and eventually died off. The first meeting of the Galway Urban District Council in 1925 had a deputation from Salthill who listed proposed improvements, In the 1930s a Salthill Development Committee was set up.

The belief of the abduction of humans into the fairy world is a common theme in our Irish folklore tradition, as it is in most fairy beliefs throughout Europe. Pre baptised children and young brides are often common targets. Parents may be shocked when they first see that their infant child has been replaced by ‘a wizened fairy’, and quickly realise that the child is a changeling. Although these events are shrouded in mystery, there was often a satisfactory explanation, allowing us to understand the occurrence in human terms.

The fairies seek new born children, generally boys, because it was believed fairies were decedent from angels expelled from Heaven. New blood would allow them back. Parents often dressed their baby boys as girls to confuse the fairies; but once baptised the children were usually safe enough.

The problem with sports games is that there is very little opportunity to ever improve the product. Aside from controls and graphics, the game must mirror what real life is like, so if there is no change in the sport, then it is likely there is going to be no change in the game.
